The Cordillera Azul REDD+ Project is situated in the lush lowland and montane forests spanning four departments in central Peru: San Martín, Ucayali, Huánuco, and Loreto. Covering a vast area of 1,353,190 hectares, the project is expected to achieve over 15,700,000 tCO2e in emissions reductions during its first 10 years. The project has a total crediting period of 20 years, from August 8, 2008, to August 7, 2028.
As a designated national park, the project area is home to more than 1,000 vertebrate species and over 6,000 plant species, including IUCN Endangered species such as the Peruvian Spider Monkey, Silvery Woolly Monkey, and Giant Otter. Prior to the project, nearby communities relied heavily on subsistence agriculture, which led to deforestation. To address this, the project has introduced sustainable livelihood alternatives.
One notable initiative is the “Kari Isa Xanu Crafts,” where women from the Yamino community use traditional plant-based dyeing techniques to produce textiles, thereby creating sustainable income opportunities for the local women.
The project is managed by Centrao de Conservacion, Investigacion, y Manejo de Areas Naturales (CIMA), a Peruvian NGO with extensive expertise in various fields including finance, administration, law, anthropology, education, biology, forestry, mapping, and GIS. CIMA’s comprehensive skill set supports the project’s effective management and its commitment to conservation and sustainable development.
